JDapter - Tesla charging for your EV

We are assembling an email list for our upcoming release of "JDapter", that will allow your J1772 / L2 equipped vehicle (every current plug-in car in North America) to use a Tesla charge station at thousands of locations.

This allows any modern EV (other than Tesla) to use the Tesla UMC / Mobile Connector / HPWC / Wall Connector.

Works at any voltage up to 264 volts, up to 80 amps.

NOTE: does not allow Tesla Supercharger" access.

That is basically an adapter from Tesla plug to J1772 .
It basically allows L2 (40 amp in case of Rav4EV) charging with the build in L2 charger
correct ?

Yes.

Would it be safe to assume that there is some method of locking the JDapter to the vehicle so it cannot be easily stolen when in use?

Do you have a time frame when the adapter will be available?

Does Tesla mind if other EV cars use their charging stations, or are they reserved for purebloods? Maybe this hasn't come up yet, because there were no adapters for other cars, or maybe it won't be an issue because most of these charging stations aren't owned by Tesla anyway (that's how it looks on PlugShare in Georgia). But I guess Tesla owns all of the SuperChargers?

How fast would this charge a RAV, as compared to a 6-kW L2?

Thanks,

JDapter - Tesla charging adaptor pre-Kickstarter campaign

All,

You are receiving this email because you expressed interest in JDapter, the Tesla charge station adapter for your EV.

You will be able to plug any modern EV in North American or Japan into any Alternating Current (AC) powered Tesla UMC / mobile connector / HPWC / wall connector. There are thousands of these throughout North America and Japan. Alternating Current (AC) is the type of electricity in your house or business.

*************

NOTE 1: JDapter will NOT work with the Tesla Supercharger - Direct Current (DC) charging

NOTE 2: JDapter will NOT work with vehicles with European Mennekes Type 2 inlets

NOTE 3: JDapter will NOT work with Tesla UMC / mobile connector / HPWC / wall connector with European Mennekes Type 2 plugs

NOTE 4: JDapter will NOT work with TESLA Roadster charge stations. JDapter will, however, work with Tesla Roadster using Tesla or aftermarket supplied J1772 adaptor

**************

If your vehcile did not come with a J1772 / "L1" / "L2" / Type 1 inlet, we can sell you a J1772 inlet for your EV. For the ZERO motorycle, we have adaptors for the ZERO C13 plug, too.

Tesla AC charger stations have maximum capabilities as follows:

1) HPWC - 80 amps / 208-240 volts only (19.2kW max, adjustable at installation from 12 amps to 80 amps)

2) UMC - 40 amps / 120-208-240 volts (9.6kW max, adjustable with interchangeable wall plugs from 12 to 40 amps)

*********************

We intend to offer a Kickstarter campaign to get this up and running. The timelines are 30 days for the Kickstarter campaign, starting 15 Sept 2016, then within six months, we should be able to ship your product.

We anticipate the cost at $199 each. If you are a reseller, or just want to order 5 or more, contact us for wholesale pricing after the Kickstarter campaign.

What I will need from each of you is that once the Kickstarter campaign begins, please post on EV related forums to help get the required number of sales. If we don't hit our financing goal within 30 days, the money is returned, and the project ends. So, we don't want to fail !!!

Based on the intial interest, I think we can get well over 100 on the first day, so we will carefully consider the expected 30 day sales with the required advertsing to get it all done. I will update you in the coming weeks to a month.

Again, the Tesla Supercharger DC charging network is not possible to use, even though Tesla cars can use CHAdeMO charging equipment with an adaptor. No, we will never build such an adaptor.

JDapter will only work with Tesla AC charging equipment that every Tesla owner has, like the UMC / mobile connector or the HPWC / wall connector / "destination chargers".

CAVEATS:

Tesla owned AC charging equipment that is at a Tesla Service Center, for instance, is obviously intended for Tesla cars, so please ask first before plugging in anywhere that you don't own or have a network card for (like ChargePoint, eVgo, Blink, Greenlots, AeroVironment, EVconnect, SemaConnect, etc). The same would be true of a Tesla car at any J1772 charging station using the Tesla supplied adaptor. Use courtesy, and don't get yourself accused of theft.

If somebody is plugged into a charge location after expressly being told not to do so, that's theft. If you don't want to be arrested / detained / ticketed, I recommend not stealing charging services.

The charging station site owner / operator is the final authority as to if you can charge at a particular location. If there's a question about plugging in anywhere, I'd strongly recommend getting permission. That permission is between the EV owner / operator and the charge station owner / operator.

Hopefully, this is common sense so far.

First and foremost, owning an EV doesn't authorize any person to plug in wherever they please. Having the Tesla supplied adaptors for Tesla cars to use J1772 and CHAdeMO does not authorize every Model S / 3 / X to use the private J1772 in my driveway, or the private CHAdeMO at a workspace. The same is true with JDapter; it doesn't give you free reign to plug in wherever you like.

So, to repeat, if the owner / operator of a Tesla HPWC destination charger does not explicitly give you permission to use it, don't. If you have any question whatsoever, get permission from the owner / operator of the charging equipment prior to using it.

There's a complaint amongst some Tesla car owners that if Tesla Motors donated a charge station to a hotel, for instance, then that is for Tesla owner's exclusive use.

But, many times, these same Tesla owners don't use the same rationalization for their use of a charging station donated by Nissan, for instance (Nissan has donated thousands of them). These folks find it perfectly rational to use the Tesla supplied J1772 and CHAdeMO adaptors while using Nissan donated charging equipment, for instance.

Be courteous in any exchanges or debates that may come up.

Thanks,

Tony Williams
