Last week Toyota announced that it would be curtailing plans for widespread sales of its first all-electric car. Toyota had hoped to sell a couple thousand electric vehicles that it called the eQ, which was an all electric version of the Scion iW. Now Toyota says it will offer about 100 editions of the eQ car in the U.S. and Japan, with perhaps none at all making it to Canada.

Toyota's vicechairman in charge of vehicle development said "The current capabilities of electric vehicles do not meet society's needs, whether it may be the distance the cars can run, or the costs, or how it takes a long time to charge."

Toyota instead will focus on it's electric hybrid lineup - offering 21 of them by 2015, with 14 of them being all-new.
