Rav4 EV for sale, POST HERE ONLY

CarMax has 4 currently. 3 are in California and are transferable. One curiously is in Maryland (!) and is not transferable. Anyone in the MD/NoVA region looking for one?!

Hi, I'm selling my RAV4 EV since I just moved to a multi-unit complex that's relatively old and I no longer have a means to charge my car.
It's a 2012 model with 18K miles.

CarMax has 5 used RAV4 EVs ("RAV4s EV"?) at the moment, from $31-36k... but they had 6 until a few hours ago:

I paid the transfer fee today and a blue 2012 with < 12k miles is now en route from Sacramento/Fairfield to my local store in Denver. I haven't committed to buying it yet but will have 72 hours once it arrives and is prepped during which I'll have right of first refusal.

I'm psyched. I think $31k is a good deal, even with a $599 transfer fee on top of that to get it to Denver, plus I will be opting for the ~$1100 MaxCare 5 year/50k mile (iirc) extended warranty with no deductible. My hope is that this will shield me from out of state support issues, although only time will tell.

Welcome aboard! However, for the same price, you should look into getting the Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty that gives you 6 years/125k mile warranty bumper to bumper including the EV parts. If Toyota Corporate does have to help out coordinating a fix after 36k/50k miles for a component, they are already familiar with working through Toyota's warranty system. Trying to get MaxCare to cough up $5k(?) to fix a heater will not be Toyota Corporate's fight, but yours.

I second the idea of getting the "real" Toyota extended warranty. I have 7 years / 125,000 miles. 8 years / 125,000 miles is available. Working through a third party with an out-of-state car sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Other than that, it seems CarMax has a good program to get these cars out-of-state.

I know it has been mentioned before but which dealer does the over the phone purchase of Toyota Extended Warranty?

I'd like to know this too - or should I call Dianne since we got both EVs from her?

I've heard very good things about MaxCare. See Doug DeMuro's ongoing articles on his Range Rover's repairs via MaxCare as posted on Jalopnik.

Depending on you're driving habits you'll probably find you do many more miles in an EV!
50K miles doesn't seem that much, I would get a 125K warranty through Toyota. If anything electronic fails it will be an expensive repair.

I see a big "does not cover" section in which hybrid battery pack is listed. There's no verbiage reflecting the RAV4 EV and its particular components, of course. I'm leery.

Note that I could and would plan to go to a CarMax store for repairs. If I avoid the Toyota dealer the chance of getting flak for not being within the authorized service area is nil. On the other hand, the probability of them being able to fix it also is quite low... but they can and do call upon Toyota to help, and in the absolute worst case I have them for a contractual violation.

We have had our leased LEAF since August 2013. Haven't driven it that much--preschool is close for wife's driving routine and I either take my car or bike to work.

I too had the same concerns and asked Troy at Greensfield Toyota in Mass. He said to call Toyota Corporate directly, which I did. They said our EV items are covered under this policy. I recently posted about my heater being covered (Telsa only part) and I am out of state.

Summarized, I was told by Toyota Corporate that there exists an unpublicized 8/80 EV powertrain warranty. I also was told by Toyota Financial (which runs Extra Care) that Extra Care Platinum does NOT cover EV components.

It may well be a good deal given heater unreliability, but is not the magic bullet for EV drivetrain bet-hedging.

The 8 year / 100,000 mile EV battery warranty is California law (hybrids are 8 year / 150,000 miles, with the bizarre assumption they will drive more).

Tony, do you have a source for this? My google-fu turned up nothing regarding CARB ZEV warranty mandates. Sure, there are hybrid emissions control warranties (10/150, I believe) and a 10/100 mandate for AT-PZEV certification but nothing for ZEVs proper afaik:

This linked article cites Tesla only having a 3/36 warranty on their original Roadster...

Also note that Toyota Corporate repeatedly told me 8/80, not 8/100. Toyota Financial/Extra Care guy did say 8/100 but I'd trust the home office on this one.

Whether this supposed 8/80 warranty is a CARB thing is very important for those out of state, as relevant to this very thread, of course.
