Aug 28, 2014: Production has ended of the Rav4 EV after almost 2600 were produced. As of now (Nov 2014), there are about 200 hundred on the ground at dealers, and that's it.

97 sold in Oct 2014, 2353 total sales.

Total production: 2538

Serial numbers 1001 - 3538

There probably will be a few here and there until Jan 1, 2015.

As of Oct 31, 2014, 185 total remain to be sold.

************

This is why Toyota sold exactly one Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) with no options except three colors and floor mats (all cars got the "optional" floor mats).

Read this tutorial:

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/zevprog/factsheets/zev_tutorial.pdf

It will answer lots of questions. In a nutshell, if Toyota makes 0.79% of it production with ZEV's "credits", that is one part of the overall compliance with California Air Resources Board (CARB) rules.

900,000 cars sold in California by Toyota for three model years, 2012-2014, multiplied by 0.79% equals 7110 credits for CARB-ZEV that need to be earned, and each Rav4 EV is 3 credits IF THE CAR IS SOLD IN CALIFORNIA.

So, 7110 divided by 3 = 2370 minimum ZEV cars over all three model years, 2012-2014. Toyota built about 2600, however a number of those were sold out-of-state until Toyota stopped that in October 2013.

For model year 2015 and beyond, Toyota will use a hydrogen car for CARB-ZEV compliance at 9 credits per car. That means they only have to sell 790 cars over the three model years, 2015-2017. That's only 263 cars per year.

Also, after 2017, when other manufacturers are required to sell in all CARB-ZEV states, auto manufacturers like Toyota, Honda and Hyundai are allowed to sell only in California, as hydrogen is exempt from the "Traveling Provision".

CARB-ZEV - California’s ZEV program has now been adopted by the states of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont. These states, known as the “Section 177 states,” have chosen to adopt California's air quality standards in lieu of federal requirements as authorized under Section 177 of the federal Clean Air Act. Additionally, California’s GHG standards are now federal law. Maine and New Jersey are participating with ZEV initiatives, but are not signatory CARB-ZEV states.

********

After selling only 28 cars in December 2013 and only 68 in January 2014 with a $14k lease incentive, Toyota is back to blowing them out with huge $17,500 incentives and unlimited miles in California ONLY through Dec 1, 2014

Check out Dianne's deals at Carson Toyota:

UPDATE: Nov 2014 - Dianne is completely sold out, and no RAV4 EV's remain for sale anywhere in Southern California.

Last update Nov 6, 2014. 2pm

Dianne's EV deals!
I now have just 10 EVs HERE.
The last one will probably be sold in very early November. For Good. Forever.

What I have left:

4 Pearl white
6 Silver

If these #'s change it upwards (as they have recently), will ONLY be because I managed to gather an extra somehow from another dealer, but I also incur extra shipping charges when I do that...

And, here's the special!
My deal goes thru Dec 1st. Or till I'm sold out.

I have all three color choices, and all three choices are the same pricing thru 11/3. I'll probably be sold out by then though... or close to it.

There's $17,500 lease cash thru Dec 1.

I have a 10K lease for as low as $382-399 + tax with none of *your own* cash out of pocket (you'd front the state's 2500), and that same lease plan is about $45 more a month for UNLIMITED miles. The payments vary pretty wildly due to the sales tax varying on all that cap reduction, but it is best to call me direct at 949-689-0717 to get specifics for YOUR personal terms for your location! I am also cross-posting this to the EV Facebook page...

Unlimited mileage leases with absolutely ZERO out of your pocket, with you personally pocketing the state's $2500 are just $490-505 a month + tax (The payments vary pretty wildly due to the sales tax varying on all that cap reduction) ...

Production ended 8/27-8/28 so this is the last of them ... last few cars to roll off the line!!!

The official Toyota offering:

****************

NOTE 1: EXPECT THE DEALER'S FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE PROBLEMS INPUTTING THE UNLIMITED MILEAGE LEASE IN THEIR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOUR LEASE DOCUMENTS ARE PROPER FOR WHEN TOYOTA FINANCIAL REJECTS IT MANY WEEKS LATER. It should show "N/A" twice for miles and rate per mile in section 10 of the lease contract, "Excessive Wear and Use".

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8745#p8745

NOTE 2: NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California. That means you won't be able to lease out-of-state at the reduced prices, because Toyota will not get the 3 California Air Resources Board (CARB) Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) credits unless first registered in California.

NOTE 3: July 2013, the lease discount cash was called "$15,400 TFS Subvention Lease Cash" Yes, you get to pay sales tax on the discount!!!

NOTE 4: January 2014, the new 24 month lease offer does not qualify for the $2500 California state mail-in rebate. The lease must be a minimum of 36 months

NOTE 5: The dealer may try to sell you a low mileage "used" car so that they can claim and keep the government incentives.

NOTE 6: Even if your out-of-state dealer says they will work on your car, read this thread:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=11236#p11236

NOTE 7: The state of California is running out of money for the $2500 rebate checks. Right now (April 2014), you can expect a check in September 2014. After April, there may not be anything.

Update on cost comparisons with electric and oil burner Rav4 EV with current lease incentive of $16,500 off. California only, offer good through May 5, 2014. When the last of 2600 are built, they won't make or sell any more:

Since you could easily drive 100,000 miles in 3 years on an unlimited mileage lease, here's that comparison with a $500 per month / zero down lease / unlimited miles. Lease "sales price" is $500 multiplied by 36 months:

-------------- Rav4 EV --- Rav4 EV ---- Rav4 V6 oil burner
--------------- lease ----- purchase ---- purchase

Sales Price- $18,000 --- $51,000 ----$26,000
Fuel cost ---$ 3,000 ---- $ 3,000 -----$18,000
Oil changes ---------------------------- $ 300
Smog Check----------------------------$ 100
Maintenance $1300 ----- $ 1300 -----$ 1900

Subtotals -- $22,300 --- $55,300 --- $46,300
Tax breaks - (2500) ---- (10,000) --- $ 0
Toy. discount - N/A ------ (2,500) ---- $ 0

Interest ----- $ 0 --------- $5,000 ----- $2,500

Residual -----$18,000 -------- N/A -----------N/A

Net costs -- $37,800 --- $47,800 ---- $48,800

Used value - $30,000 ------ $30,000 ----- $12,500

Total cost --- $ 7,800 ------- $17,800 ----$36,300

LEASE DOWN-PAYMENTS:

I never recommend putting any money down an a lease to get a lower monthly lease payment. If the car is "totaled" as you drive it off the dealership's lot, all your down payment was just lost forever.

$7500 federal credit (IRS form 8936) applies to new cars only with purchase only, not on a lease. Toyota did not pass this credit to you on a lease prior to July 2013, but now they have begun offering you the $7500 fed tax credit in the lease. You have to owe the IRS at least $7500 for this taxable year to get the full benefit of $7500 in a purchase. No carry-overs to next year. If you only owe $1234 in federal taxes, you will only get $1234 of the $7500 credit.

$2,500 California state rebate for new cars only. Apply here for the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) which is funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and administered statewide by the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), 9325 Sky Park Court, #100, San Diego, CA 92123. Your state or province may also have incentives for out of state sales.

http://energycenter.org/programs/clean_vehicle_rebate_project

CAVEAT EMPTOR: known dealer scam is to sell you a "used" car and keep the tax credit. This is what can happen if you fall for the dealer's deception:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8134#p8134

April 2014: the state of California may run out of money in this program after April.

EXTENDED WARRANTY

I personally would not consider an extended warranty on a 36,000 mile lease. Your car will always be within the factory warranty period.

I do not normally buy the extended warranty at a dealer, but instead wait until I'm getting close to the end of the factory warranty period; for the Rav4 EV, that's 3 years / 36,000 miles. This way, you can actually shop for the best price amongst dealers anywhere in the USA.

Don't let the finance salesperson pressure you into a warranty (to increase their profit... called the "back-end" in the business, and that's exactly where you'll get it). If you do buy it, and subsequently cancel, it will take them many weeks or months to refund your money. In addition, they will prorate the months and miles on the car, even though it had a factory warranty concurrent with the extended warranty.

There is absolutely no reason to buy the warranty until you are absolutely sure you will go past the warranty period, and you know you have the best price. Then, it will likely exclude anything that would matter, like the battery!! By the way, the list price on that battery is $36,000.

MODEL YEAR DIFFERENCES

The only differences between a 2012, 2013 and 2014 model years is the the 10th digit from the left of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) has a "C" for 2012, "D" for 2013 and 2014 has an "E". You will find the VIN through the front window, looking from the outside on the driver's side, at the bottom.

The Rav4 EV began sales on Sept 24, 2012 and production completed August 28, 2014. Almost 2600 total were produced.

Here are the sales to date:

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=418#p418

No, the Rav4 EV won't be extended or continued after 2600 are built.

CALIFORNIA CONTRACT CANCELLATION POLICY

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d05/vc11709_2.htm

California law does not provide for a "cooling-off" or other cancellation period for vehicle lease or purchase contracts. Therefore, you cannot later cancel such a contract simply because you change your mind, decide the vehicle costs too much, or wish you had acquired a different vehicle. After you sign a motor vehicle purchase or lease contract, it may only be canceled with the agreement of the seller or lessor or for legal cause, such as fraud.

************************

USED Rav4 EV 's:

If you buy used, even with almost zero miles on the car, you not only lose the tax credits and rebates, you may also lose the ability to "Lemon Law" the car should it come to that.

***************************

CALIFORNIA SALES TAX (purchase) or USE TAX (lease)

On an "in-state" purchase, you pay the applicable tax for your county/city. For an in state lease, you pay a "use tax" on the monthly payment. For out-of-state, you pay nothing to California with a proper Bill of Laden from a shipping company.

DO NOT TAKE DELIVERY IN CALIFORNIA

...unless you want to pay California taxes!!! You will pay applicable taxes in your out-of-state jurisdiction. There's a whole thread devoted to out-of-state purchases and leases.

**************************

OUT OF STATE SERVICE AND WARRANTY CLAIMS

Just know that an out-of-state dealer may be willing to service your Rav4 EV, but Toyota USA may not pay them for warranty claim reimbursements and the service payments for Toyota Care. Kevin Spillane, Toyota Customer rep for the Rav4EV, has this to say about out-of-state servicing:

1) Toyota Customer Care - the normal 5000 mile interval checkups. Not covered outside of California authorized dealers. Expect any out-of-state-dealer who performs a routine service to your car to be denied payment by Toyota for "Toyota Care". No matter what your out-of-state dealer tells you, it won't be covered under "Toyota Customer Care"

2) Tesla drivetrain problems - Not covered outside of California authorized dealers.

3) Non-EV problems but specific to Rav4 EV - like a failed heater on a "case by case basis" (that means that they can jerk you around if they feel like it). They have an authorized field engineer coming to a local dealer to perform the work. It has nothing to do with the dealer themselves, it's just a place to work on the car.

4) Rav4 issues shared with the oil burning version - covered.

NOTE TO ALL OUT OF STATE BUYERS:

NEW FOR OCTOBER 2013: Lease bonus cash is only good for cars registered NEW in the state of California.

1. Press the “Home” button
2. Touch the "Settings" gear icon on the “Main Menu” screen
3. Touch “Phone” on the “Setup” screen
4. Touch “Phone Display Settings”
5. Select "off" for "Display Phone Book Transfer Status"
6. Select "off" for "Display Call History Transfer Status"
7. Touch "Save"

1. Press the “Home” button
2. Touch the "Settings" gear icon on the “Main Menu” screen
3. Touch “Bluetooth” on the “Setup” screen
4. Touch “Detailed Bluetooth Settings”
5. Touch the down arrow once
6. Select "off" for "Display Phone Status"
7. Select "off" for "Display Portable Player Status"
8. Touch "Save"

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITHOUT FUNCTIONING INTERIOR LIGHTS:

A pin is located in the engine bay passenger side fuse box to activate the lights. Inside that fuse box, there is a white "fuse" without any number and that is the "pin". Under the fuse cover, there is a location labeled "short". Put the "pin" into the "short" slot and interior function like light, garage door opener, external door handle switch will be activated.

***********************************

IF YOUR CAR IS DELIVERED WITH A REGISTRATION FOR AN OIL BURNING CAR INSTEAD OF AN ELECTRIC CAR:

Make sure your dealership ticked the correct box for "motive power" on the registration. If they incorrectly entered "gas", you'll need to get it corrected. In California, the DMV requests that the dealership complete Sections G & H of form "Reg 256". For section G, the sample response given was:

"Due to a clerical error on the Report of Sale, the motive power was entered as "gas (G)", when the actual motive power for this vehicle is "100% electric (E)". Please correct. No fraud intended."

The dealer then signs and dates Section H.

************************************

IF YOUR CAR'S UNLIMITED LEASE IS REJECTED BY TOYOTA FINANCIAL

EXPECT THE DEALER'S FINANCE DEPARTMENT TO HAVE PROBLEMS INPUTTING THE UNLIMITED MILEAGE LEASE IN THEIR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOUR LEASE DOCUMENTS ARE PROPERLY REFLECT AN UNLIMITED LEASE FOR WHEN TOYOTA FINANCIAL REJECTS IT MANY WEEKS LATER. It should show "N/A" twice for miles and rate per mile in section 10 of the lease contract, "Excessive Wear and Use".

http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8745#p8745

************************************

IF YOU WANT YOUR CAR DELIVERED WITH SPECIFIC SETTINGS:

You will likely want your dealer to set the reverse beeper to a single beep. I highly recommend writing this in the sales contract, particularly for an out of state sale. You will not like this distracting beeping in reverse. Also, I recommend setting the auto door locks to whatever setting you want prior to delivery (always unlocked, lock when in Drive, only unlock driver's door, etc).

If you don't want the navigation screen to automatically pop back to the map mode, press the "Home" button below the screen (like on an iPad / iPhone), then press the lower right hand corner symbol for page 2, then press the upper left hand symbol, then scroll down until you see Auto Screen Change, then select OFF.

That's interesting about the zip code. Glad I got my discount before they changed their minds.

You'd be a fool not to buy a second RAV now, Tony. That brings the price after all rebates, but before any dealer discount, to around $31k for you?

Buying any other EV in southern California would be crazy with these deals available.

I was just rushing in myself to post it. But no.

I wasn't even going to check again until 3/4 when the current $7500 So Cal / $7000 No Ca program was supposed to end. There seemed to be a lot of No Cal dealers and some So Cal dealers offering big discounts lately. I figured I would check to see if anything was going on. Well now they are doing $10,000 CASH in So Cal. I presume that they took the money from dealer's who were keeping it themselves and moved it to the customer. I seriously don't any So Cal dealer is going to give $2-4k cash plus the $10k Toyota is now offering.

Personally I was playing a waiting game to see if they upped it on 3/4. Well they did it before, DAYS before.

Here's the other curious CATCH people the So Cal website also says the 60 month free financing expires on all the cars on 3/4. So EVEN if Toyota doe's keep the $10K after 3/4, or even up it slightly to say $11k or $12k it's UNLIKELY they will have the 60 month free financing so you'll have to figure something else out yourself and likely end up eating the difference.

I'd say if you were on the fence waiting to see what happens it's unlikely the deal with get better, at least in the short term, perhaps in 6-12 months if they still have problems moving them.

But come on ! ! !

$50k - $10k - $10k (Fed/State-Upto)

That's $30k people. That's MORE than HALF a base Tesla Model S and in the high spec Nissan Leaf for 2013 which isn't shipping yet.

The LEAF is shipping now, including the SL.

Wait what. A funny loaded leaf is only $36,740. And I can get it in any color (including Gunmetal), and an ALL black interior, and Leather, and 360 degree camera system. What ?!?!?! It also looks like the Leaf has much higher MPGe, Range, and better charging.

Oh COME on ! ! !

Something is WRONG here.

Well one thing is that both Nissan dealers near me are HORRIBLE. Nissan actually bought back one of the dealerships and then sold it to someone else and they are JUST as bad. Haha. Poor local leaf owners.

I am very excited about these deep discounts but it has almost hit the point that I am wondering "why" Toyota is doing this. Theories?

It's a sunk investment and they need to sell them to meet government requirements. They have to make them per contract with Tesla, or already have them all made and in a warehouse somewhere plus they need to keep their fleet MGP targets. Either way it's going to cost them more in the short / long term if they don't sell them. A few million hit is chump change in big picture scope of their business. Also remember it wasn't that long ago Toyota was spending a small fortune to rebuild their consumer image. Add that to the still slow economy. It's also a good test bed for future all EV, though I think the PEHV works pretty well for them.

I can tell you why....they're not selling.
For example on 11/14/2012 cars.com showed 57 in dealer inventory. 12/11/2012 showed there were 81 and today they show 162 in stock. Considering the age of the stock and the dealer most likely paying flooring to the bank, these are getting expensive. It's not a $13,000 Maxtix sitting on the lot. Toyota is throwing money at these things to get rid of them. The EV market is still somewhat limited and with a 2013 Leaf S for MSRP of $28,800 with a net of $18,800 after $7,500 Fed & $2,500 State it's tough. Then when you consider the RAV lease being a non-starter it's really tough!

I was noting something similar. I've been tracking the VIN and dealer stock numbers at my local dealers (as well as watching Cars.Com). I've seen my local dealers stock growing as well. The interesting this is to look at say their stock numbers and see how many "possible" (all) cars stock over the last few months. The curious thing is to look at the VIN's on the cars and especially to see the car they had months ago is still on the lot but they've added more. I'll take one of the newer one's thanks, less drivers, less mileage, and less glitches hopefully.

I just don't know if I want to get something this weekend or see what happens and take the risk. I just wish it had the 2013 RAV4 interior. Soooo much nicer. They may be calling these 2013 models but they are using 2012 bodies. Plus I want an all black interior. Changing the fabric is easy enough. Dying / painting the plastic is tricky. And I'm sure not going to get 2012 parts and make it official.

I completely understand they are not selling but why? Are these selling slower that other electric cars or is the entire segment slowing?

Toyota is not really advertising them.
VERY limited state availability
High Retail price compared to other Higher (Tesla) and lower (Nissan) EV as well as PEHV (Toyota themselves, Chevy, Honda, Etc).
More toys available on other Higher (Tesla) and lower (Nissan) EV and PEHV.

The RAV4EV is an awesome vehicle, but Toyota isn't really pushing it and it doesn't fit into the higher or lower end of the market. The fast that they are only making a limit quantity and then that's it probably isn't helping either.

The arrival of the 2013 Nissan Leaf's probably has something to do with the recent further price plummet...

You need a SoCal zip code; it's still $7000 in NorCal:
Taken from the linked Special Offers web site (after inputing a NorCal zip):

"2012 RAV4 EV - 0% APR for 60 months PLUS $8,800 Bonus Cash!" I remain puzzled by this reduced discount for the hippies up north but it isn't as bad as folks are saying.

And it's my understanding that will remain the case for the duration of this compliance car run.

The thing that doesn't compute for me, besides the discount discrepancy between northern and southern CA, is Toyota's lack of push to get this vehicle into the minds of potential buyers. I am the only person at my place of work who knows Toyota has an EV, and I work with a fairly well informed, green leaning and affluent group of folks.

The eroding price for a new RAV4 EV is on a collision course with the price of gasoline. If gas continues to go up higher and higher, then by this Summer, this whole crazy fire sale situation could easily turn around . . . FAST! When consumers have to pay $5/gallon for gas, or higher, there will be a big rush to buy EVs, all makes and model EVs. Especially those with very low or 0% factory financing, and evem more so while the market is still enjoying deep discount prices. By August, if both these trends continue, I predict the surplus of "2012" RAV4 EVs will start selling like hotcakes. Another factor to encourage a run on these cars would be the eventual discontinuation of the $7500 tax credit. That could happen sooner than we think because of the way things are going with the federal government's reoccurring fiscal cliff woes.

Buying a RAV4 EV NOW all boils down to . . . is the glass half full or half empty with respect to the economy?

This is why Toyota is selling exactly one car with no options except three colors and floor mats.

Read this tutorial:

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/zevprog/factsheets/zev_tutorial.pdf

It will answer lots of questions. In a nutshell, if Toyota makes 0.79% of its production with ZEV's, that is one part of the overall compliance with CARB rules.

900,000 cars sold by Toyota for three model years, 2012-2014, multiplied by 0.79% equals 7110 credits need to be earned, and each Rav4 EV is 3 CARB-ZEV credits IF SOLD IN CALIFORNIA.

So, 7110 divided by 3 = 2370 cars over all three model years, 2012-2014.
