EV safety is a good argument for promoting EVs to replace gasoline cars. We should think about getting in a car that uses gasoline with its potential of cooking you in the event of a crash or a malfunction. EV manufacturers have tried to make their cars safer by isolating the battery in the event of a crash. After more than a hundred years, why haven’t gas car makers produced vehicles that can’t catch fire? Cars have been mandated to have safety glass, seat belts, air bags, and many other safety devices, but gasoline has been pretty well left off the list. Why should we accept seeing a gas car burning by the roadside or catching fire after it crashes. Shouldn’t gas cars be required to have, at a minimum, things like fuel line isolating devices, fire suppression canisters in the engine compartment and the gas tank plus an emergency system to chemically change the gasoline so it won’t burn. This would bring gasoline cars nearer the level of fire safety that EV owners have now.
