OK, so I am looking at trying to get from SB to Anaheim and it is 132 miles. Clearly, this is more than I can go, even with an extended charge. Does anyone have that chart that Tony made (I think) of how many miles you can get per hour of charging? I am wondering if I go for an extended charge, plan on a short (30-45 min?) charge to get the 12-15 miles, then do a full charge in Anaheim and repeat on the way back. I need to get up and back in one day.

What do you all think? :?:
 
I have recently driven 135 miles on the freeway at 60 mph, cruise control, eco-high air conditioning for 50%.
This was a loop so not much elevation effect. I have 35,000 on my RAV. I think 5 or 6 miles remaining showed at the end.
 
Pretty easy trip, but long wait in between.

To do your trip in one day, round trip will require about 6-9 hours of charging at your destination.

If you have access to 240 volts on a 50 amp circuit at your destination (hopefully with a NEMA 14-50R wall outlet), we can rent you a JESLA for the week. That will charge your car in 4-5 hours.

Most RV Parks have "50 amp service". Maybe there is one nearby to your destination?

If you drive 55mph, you could probably do it non-stop, but it's easy enough to stop somewhere for a pitstop for an hour or so to charge along the route. There are literally THOUSANDS of places to charge your car in SoCal.

Use the PlugShare trip planning feature and filter for "EV Plug" only. At a typical J1772 station, you will add about 15-20 miles per hour charging.

This would be a perfect use of fast charging. With the Jdemo, you could stop once for 15-30 minutes on the way down, charge on J1772 while you are there and then another quick stop on the way home. Maybe in the future?

At a steady 65mph on level, no wind roadways without heater use, the 2012-2014 Toyota RAV4 EV will consume 3.4 miles per kWh, and almost 4.0 miles per kWh at 55mph. With a 90% capacity battery, your range from a full "extended" charge is:

128 miles = (3.4 miles/kWh) * (41.8kWh * 90%)

150 miles = (4.0 miles/kWh) * (41.8kWh * 90%)


1) Make sure the cabin heater is off (seat heaters are ok). Air conditioning is ok if it's warm.

2) It would be best to start your drive very nearly after the full charge was complete (the battery will be at the right temperature).

3) Make sure you selected "extended" charge.

4) Reset the consumption meter (press navigation "hard button", then "EV", then upper left button. Clear both pages of data.

5) Use "Map mode" from the lower left hand side of the Navigation map to select a split screen with navigation and consumption rate.

6) Reset trip odometer


Public J1772 charging will likely provide 5.3kW (208v/30a @ 85% efficiency) into the battery for 15-20 miles per hour charging. At home or RV parks, at 240v/40a, that will likely be 8.2kW for 25 to 30 miles per hour charging.

the temperature will matter.

I'm always stunned by how much MORE range i get when its right around 60-75 degrees for most of my drive. At least on my Rav, its worth an extra 4-5% on a full run (one that depletes the battery to 10% or to from a full extended charge). I do that almost every week so the variability due to temperature is very obvious.

Its incredibly important to stay around the speed you want though (or slower). going 65-70 will ruin your range every time. (and its quite noticable)
 
I'm in Anaheim. When are planning to come down here? Maybe you can charge on my home charger. I'm on a 240/40 circuit so you'll be good to go in about 4.5 hours. You can pay me back if I'm ever in SB, assuming that's where you live?
