118 Miles at around 60-65 should be ok right?

Here is my planned trip. I can get a full extended charge on each side.

Yup! Easy with a full extended charge at 60-65 mph. (As long as there's not some crazy headwind the whole way.) And wait till you see how much charge you'll still have left!

The variables here are preheated the battery / cabin (or not), and cabin heater use.

The seat heaters are your friend. Dress warm in winter.

In the summer, this is an easy trip.

I just drove 240 miles yesterday with 1134, 60mph going away and arriving with about 25 GOM miles, so I drove 65mph on the return, arriving with 9 miles.

This time of year is absolutely not a problem

We've done a round trip of half your trip about 8 times this summer.

The GOM has ALWAYS been conservative for me. I have never had less range than the GOM told me....it's usually at least 15% too low. I have not really pushed it in the winter but I had one day where it told me my total range was 70 miles and I drove 70 and still had 30 left on the GOM.

The trip might be harder in the winter but I bet you could make it until at least november and then again by march (using last winter as a guide). If you were willing to stop for a quick charge on the way it would be a no brainer year round.

Mike

For the first time last week I went on an extended roadtrip with my 2014 RAV4 EV. I drove from San Diego to Palm Desert (110 miles), extended charge, and made it there with 30 miles left on the GOM.

On the way back, I turned on the AC (ECO HI) virtually the whole way home, drove uphill through the mountains for the first 30 miles (yep, only averaged 1.7kwh), and went about 68 mph when I was on the freeway. I still made it home with 20+ miles left.

San Diego > Palm Desert = 140+ miles (averaged 3.4kwh)
Palm Desert > San Diego = 130+ miles (averaged 3.2kwh)

Some things I learned:

1) That I can actually make it to Palm Desert. :). I was just a little anxious - only to the fact that if I got stranded in the mountains, the SOS call button may not have worked, since cell reception is non existent.
2) The GOM is very conservative.
3) RAV4 coasts very well.
4) While my Prius used to struggle climbing hills/mountains to Palm Desert, the RAV4 felt so smooth and climbed so effortlessly that I kept forgetting that I was actually climbing. What a difference.
5) Charged for free at various places in Palm Desert. Very cool.

This car is amazing. It made me appreciate the RAV4 EV even more. Love it.

This wait is killing me! Im really looking forward to getting my rav.

Based on a conversation I had with Mike, I figured I couldn't make it in the winter with the Rav. It looks like my fiance will be keeping my PIP that way we can still take longer trips. Including winter trips to Rochester.

It's possible I could make it in the winter but I don't want to sit somewhere in the cold charging my car for 2 hours. Taking the PIP will be a much warmer option. :)

I could be wrong here, but I think that ECO HI is actually the second most economical AC setting (first being OFF). I believe that "Normal" would have been "cranked".

Yep, you are correct. ECO HI is the most efficient setting for the AC. I just edited my post. Thanks.

Btw, can anybody tell much of a difference between ECO HI, LO and Normal?

I've only really used Eco Hi. It seems plenty strong, including driving around Vacaville on a 100+ degree day. I switched to Normal to try it out once or twice, and it seemed like the fan just blew harder.

I tend to use normal mode with my son in a car seat in the back as there are no vents back there. The higher fan speed helps to keep the air mixed between the front and back

The A/C "eco" modes seem to work fairly well to keep the interior cool even on relatively hot days, but don't forget to select "recirc" for maximum cooling. I find that the "normal" mode is a bit overwhelming, so I only use it to do a rapid cool down upon first starting out after parked in the sun on a hot day. After a few minutes switch to eco low or high generally keeps the interior at a very comfortable, air conditioned temperature. After a grocery run, including ice cream, I have yet to have anything melt on the trip home from the store.
