Platinum Warranty but no parts!!!

We have a 2014 RAV4 Ev that failed in January. We bought the Platinum warranty as soon as we acquired the car. The failure came within the warranty period, but Toyota can not get these Tesla parts. The repair is fully approved under the warranty and the dealer even has the money on account from the warranty entity to pay for the parts.

Parts needed

G9270-0R011 Converter Assembly, Elec
G9090-0R011 Charger Assembly, Elec

I've started calling the Toyota Customer service people once a week, but they are waiting for an answer from their parts people. Have noway of talking to the national parts people.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas?

We loved the vehicle but in hindsight should've parted ways last year. We were just waiting for the EV market to progress enough to offer something in this size and utility again.

Now are out the use of the vehicle and the cost of the Platinum warranty.

Re: Platinum Warranty but no parts!!!

There are third parties which could likely repair it using used parts or even by reflashing a Tesla Model S charger. The dealer might also be able to complete the repair with used parts. Obviously, it's not ideal, but it's not really that bad since any parts you would get from Tesla at this point would be refurbs at best anyway. If they can't source the parts, I don't see that you have another option.

If they are unable to repair the car, they owe you some sort of compensation, even if it's limited to the cost of the warranty.

This RAV4 had a faulty onboard charger:

After installing the charger from Tesla S and remote reprogramming* it, this car in Makawao (Hawaii) was fixed:

Thanks for the ideas.

Is there a specific model of Tesla charger that I should be looking for?

I do not know the fault codes that the dealer saw. I'll have to stop in and ask.

I'm located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dealer has another one there that they say has the same problem. It happened to us after a very, very cold week.

Note. Statistically, the most common problem with RAV4EV onboard chargers is their internal fuses https://youtu.be/jMHu2x7RC_I

I hope that you will be able to tell us the fault code (s) of the Tesla system of your vehicle.
If They don't know these codes, then perhaps You are being misled.

I finally had time to go dealer and track down the technician with the codes.

Latest estimate for the charger is Sep 20, 2023. But we had estimates of April, May, June of this year before.
The other RAV4 EV at this dealer that was needing same part has finally been repaired. I think that one was in the shop since Fall of 2022. So there is some hope.

However, considering that it will be off warranty by the time it is back on the road we are now thinking of trading it in. This Toyota dealer has already been paid to fix it and Service manager is confident that it will be, just unknown when. Anyway he vouched to sales people that it would be repaired. New sales manager offering $8,500. I know if I’d sold in summer of 2022 before it broke it could’ve gone for $13-14,000. But we only paid $11,000 five years ago, so strongly thinking about being done with it. Hate to see it go, loved it (maybe too much, hence keeping it too long)

Re: Platinum Warranty but no parts!!!

CHG_F078 is "Failure in Connecting Electric Vehicle Charger to Line Voltage". This most likely is caused by one of the internal fuses being blown, which is a very common failure on these chargers. Dealerships will only replace the entire charger assembly, and an independent EV shop has been asking $3k for used chargers.

Was there a fault code for the DC-DC converter? Same thing there, the usual failure mode is a blown fuse.

Where are you located? How many miles on your RAV4? $8500 seems low for trade-in; for a running RAV4 of average miles I would expect a trade-in closer to $10k. The new federal $4k credit for used EVs is actually causing the market value to go up for the RAV4 right now. Most private party sales seem to be $12-16k.

If you're interested in keeping your RAV4 running, feel free to PM me; I can either repair your OBC or sell you a working one at a very competitive price, same for the DC-DC if needed.

CHG_F078...
I regret that dealer technicians do not know either MONITORING ITEM or DETECTION CONDITION of this DTC. :(
Pay attention to how this malfunction was fixed by the owners themselves.
