Who is currently waiting for a drive unit replacement?

Source? As https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/low-speed-high-pitch-whine.47379/page-2#post-1088221 put it ""Tesla's goal of a 1 million mile powertrain", well they are 20k down, and 980k of reliability left to go... " Yes. They've been suffering from DU developing noise for a long time...

Tesla model S with 200k miles: 6% battery loss

Front DU was replaced per https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/29/tales-from-a-tesla-model-s-at-200k-miles/?ncid=mobilenavtrend I would be curious to hear more details as to any other repairs done and on any other vehicles in their fleet.

    Work Charging Policy

That program was in beta. I spoke to Chargepoint reps last year (IIRC) and they asked me why my work wasn't on that beta. My response was that I didn't know about it, esp. since I'm not the facilities person. I hear that might be out of beta now. My work doesn't have an official policy...

Longer Range Battery / Extra battery

For the Rav4 EV, probably never. The quantities (max 2600 vehicles) are too small for it be worth the engineering effort and cost. I'm not sure we'd ever see them for the most popular EV in the world, the Leaf, partly because their resale value is so poor. It's not worth it to pay $5500 +...

ALL POSTS - motor whine or "HUM" (Milling Sound)

Not to go too OT, but there are folks over at "TMC" who will make the bold assertion that Model S DU problems aren't due to "any fundamental design issue" and that one doesn't exist  , like at...

ALL POSTS - motor whine or "HUM" (Milling Sound)

I've known of a few Volt folks at work that had a few problems. On the BMW i3 Facebook group, there are some w/pretty trouble-free Volts and a few that were so bad, they were got buybacks via lemon law (these were the first I'd heard of). On a Leaf group, I saw another guy mentioning his '16...

Power on but will not engage drive or turn off

What if you press and hold the power button? That's the emergency shutdown on Priuses and probably all Toyotas w/SKS.

    Stuttering at 30-35 mph?

Out of curiosity, when was the Model S built? Was it on its original DU or was it a replacement already? RWD or AWD?

Considering swap for BMW i3 Rex

The REx is definitely way underpowered but "coding" can apparently get around that, so that you can get the ICE to engage earlier instead of crawling up hills when the battery's out (e.g. below 40 mph on 55+ mph speed highway hill climbs). And yes, BMW makes some things cost extra that are...

Considering swap for BMW i3 Rex

And right on cue, on the i3 FB group, one guy w/i3 REx today has a pic showing a drivetrain malfunction that says "Drivetrain Only electric drive available. Restricted range. Possible to continue journey. Please go straight to the nearest BMW i Service." In his post, he said this is going to...

Considering swap for BMW i3 Rex

Yeah, due to the wheel spin and torque steer on the FWD Rav4 EV. Weight transfer to the rear, off the wheels providing propulsion is of no help. If the Rav4 EV were RWD or AWD... Yep, for those who haven't been watching, per http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/carpool/carpool.htm "This page last...

Considering swap for BMW i3 Rex

Indeed, unless it fails on you. Then again, I've seen reports of drivetrain malfunction on both the BEV and REx versions. In some cases, they can continue driving. In others, they can't move or the car loses propulsion on them.

Considering swap for BMW i3 Rex

I'd advise against it, unless you have time for a new hobby in the event your i3 REx ends up being one of the unreliable ones and requires many trips to the dealer for repairs. Join https://www.facebook.com/groups/BMWi3/ and watch for a few weeks. You'll see what I mean. Also, numerous...

2/3 of early Model S cars can expect drivetrain failure

That's the problem... One can split hairs/argue re: the definition of "failure". The more accurate word to use is replacement (and maybe later, repair too), for whatever reason. Yes, some of the Model S drive units have failed to provide motive force. Those are a lot rarer than the DU noise...

Why a hydrogen obsession for Toyota? Their mad coal plan?

^^^ I tend to agree with your statements. ICEVs completely dominate global auto sales. In the US, last month PHEVs had a take rate of 0.28% and BEVs 0.40% per http://www.hybridcars.com/october-2015-dashboard/. Per...

Why a hydrogen obsession for Toyota? Their mad coal plan?

The bolded part was the hypothesis re: big cities that another Leafer had (his stay in Japan overlapped w/mine and I met up him briefly). He also saw few Leafs and EVs. I guess that makes sense since it seems like parking is scarce in cities so having parking AND charging there is probably...

Why a hydrogen obsession for Toyota? Their mad coal plan?

This. OP, please see http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=379, re: ZEV credits for hydrogen FCEVs vs. other ZEVs. http://www.toyota.com/esq/vehicles/regulatory/carb-mandate-for-zero-emission-vehicles.html is from 2011. You may want to skim...

Adventure with JdeMO in LA or seen one CHAdeMO seen them all

There are several threads about how crappy NRG eVgo's billing system is on MNL, such as these: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=19528 http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=19835 Buyer/customer beware. :( I've never used any of their infrastructure nor am I (thankfully?)...

RECALL: going into neutral / Speed Sensor failure

They have plenty. Sorry for the focus on drive units, but this is all I have handy right now (and have time to post right now). Although many of their drive unit replacements tend to be for noise, rather than for failure. It seems a # of Model S have needed replacement battery packs due to...

RECALL: going into neutral / Speed Sensor failure

I wouldn't call the degradation a "reliability" issue. It doesn't fail nor stop working. But, it (at least on 2011-2012 Leafs, jury's still out on others, esp. '15) does degrade quickly and far more quickly than Nissan led us all to believe. :( Probably about the only folks who will have...
