Over at the Tesla Forum, an owner created a free IOS app to help communicate someone is waiting for your SuperCharger slot. This app could also work with other public charging stations. I think it's a great idea.

Plugshare gives you the ability to check in at public charging stations of all kinds, and when checked-in other users can message you. You can also do things like indicate how long you'll be there and post helpful reviews and pictures for other EV drivers.

Of course the problem with either of these approaches is that they require both the person parked and the person waiting to actively participate; and unfortunately those "bad actors" who might squat all day at a charging station are unlikely to be considerate enough to do something like check in on plugshare or install some other community-friendly app.

Perhaps some day an OEM like Tesla will build such functionality into the car so drivers can be notified by other drivers if they're at a charging station too long, just as we get emails when we forget to plug in at home and when charging starts and finishes.
