Since our vehicle has the Tesla Model S 40 kWh battery and motor, should we be getting the same battery protection that Tesla is now installing on their production vehicles, as well as those coming in for service?

I'm sure Toyota knows about this issue. All of us would like me to be as secure as possible.

In the article it said Musk is doing this to reduce the inconvenience to the driver. It's purely voluntary on Tesla's part. If it's not mandated, Toyota will not incurred the expense of installing the battery shield.

I'm not sure what you plan on running over, but Rav4 EV has PLENTY of ground clearance. The Model S actually lowers itself at freeway speed (the software has been changed a few times as to how and when it lowers).

So, running over the same things that the two Model S cars that caught on fire (the third one was a drunk crash through a block wall) would not likely cause any problem in Rav4 EV.

By the way, the battery is about 45-50kWh in Rav4 EV, 41.8kWh usable when new.

I don't plan on running over anything, but neither did the Tesla drivers. If the only protection we have is higher ground clearance, that should not make any of us too secure.

I have zero concern over this non-issue.

I also have as much concern on this issue for the Rav4EV as I have for the the issue that caused a brand spanking new GM that burst into flame on a test drive :)
