I use my iPod touch to play music through the center USB port. I used to use the bluetooth, but it dropped out too often.

Most of the time, when I turn the car on, the music resumes playing after a second. Sometimes, it fails to start. I have not been able to find any pattern to the failure.

Anyone else experience the same issue?

I initially used my iPhone 4 with USB media playback. There were two problems with that. First, the charging rate was very slow. I suspect because the car's USB only provides 1/2A. Second, it sometimes did not respond to the steering wheel track skip commands. Changing to Bluetooth and a 2.1A 12V adapter was a much better solution for me. On Bluetooth, it sometimes has a hard time figuring out which source to play since I listed to podcasts and music. If both of those apps have been kicked out of the active RAM on the phone, it will sometimes not play anything. Also, on the dropout issue, I did have that problem on my iPhone 4 after I upgraded to iOS 7. It was definitely a multi-tasking issue. I have an iPhone 6 now, so all those problems are behind me.

Interesting.

It's an older iPod touch, a couple of releases behind in iOS. On bluetooth, it drops out too often to use.

I had the same issues you and miimura had. I have since moved the usb input to the center council, http://www.myrav4ev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=685&hilit=moving+button

Since thern, I only use bluetooth and a 32 gb micro usb thumb drive.
Problem solved.

IMHO, the bluetooth problem is due to CPU use and inadequate buffering in the iOS device. A USB stick will not have this issue. Also, on the iOS device, if you kill all the apps or other processes that may be running in the background, it may help the bluetooth audio interruptions. Searching for WiFi networks could be one such process that could be avoided by turning off WiFi.
