There was a horrific crash involving a Tesla early Friday morning in West Hollywood and the battery pack was mostly separated from the car in about four pieces that caught fire. The individual batteries appeared to have stayed with each burning piece of the pack and only exploded one battery after another as each battery got hot enough. The fire was small (nothing like gasoline catching fire) and the exploding batteries appeared to have traveled only a short distance. My opinion comes from the pictures and copy put out by the news media. I think this shows Tesla designed and built a safe battery pack even if it catches fire in a crash.
